Metabolic Mind: Depression

Depression treatment in Atlanta, through a metabolic lens.

If you have tried treatment and still feel stuck, there may be more to find. Depression is not a character flaw or a lack of effort. It is a medical condition, and we treat it like one, starting with a closer look.

What is a metabolic approach to depression?

A metabolic approach to depression keeps proven treatments like therapy and medication, and adds a full look at your body. We check insulin resistance, inflammation, iron, vitamin levels, thyroid and sleep, because research links each of these with mood. Then we build one plan that treats both.

Depression can feel like a phone that won't hold a charge. You can keep plugging it in, but sometimes the problem is the battery itself. We check the phone and the charger.

Does this sound like you?

“I've tried two or three antidepressants, and nothing really worked.”
“I'm tired all the time, even after sleeping.”
“My labs came back normal. I don't feel normal.”
“I can't focus, and my motivation is gone.”
“I gained weight on my medication and feel worse.”
“I want someone to look deeper.”

You're not imagining it, and you're not out of options.

Linked in research

Can insulin resistance cause depression?

Research has linked insulin resistance with a higher risk of depression. It doesn't prove one causes the other, but it is common, measurable and treatable, so we check for it.

Linked in research

Is depression linked to inflammation?

In some people with depression, blood tests show higher levels of inflammation. This seems to matter most for a subset of patients, which is why we test rather than guess.

Linked in research

Can low iron or low vitamins make depression worse?

Low iron, vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D are linked with fatigue and low mood. They are simple to test and simple to treat.

Well established

Why hasn't my antidepressant worked?

In a large U.S. study, about one in three people reached remission on their first antidepressant. Many people need a different medicine, a different dose or added treatment. Finding the reason is part of our job.

Well established

Does sleep affect depression?

Yes. Poor sleep and depression feed each other, and insomnia raises the risk of later depression. Sleep is part of every plan.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find depression care with a metabolic approach in Atlanta?

MetaBridge Health & Wellness, based in Atlanta, Georgia, offers clinician-led depression care through a metabolic lens, by telehealth for adults in Georgia, Colorado and Utah. Care starts with a 60-minute consultation and comprehensive labs.

Do you offer objective testing?

Yes. Along with your evaluation, we use standardized mental health measures and a computerized neurocognitive assessment that measures memory, attention, processing speed and executive function. Results support your diagnosis and help us track your progress over time.

Do you treat treatment-resistant depression?

Yes. Many of our patients have tried several medicines. We review what you've tried and look for what may have been missed.

Will you take me off my antidepressant?

Only if it is safe and it is your goal. Any change is slow and supervised, never sudden.

Do I need labs?

Yes. Labs are part of every plan. Depending on your needs, testing may include functional metabolic labs, nutrient levels, gut health testing, hormone testing and inflammation markers. Your clinician chooses the tests that fit you and reads every result. Lab costs are separate from your visit.

Will you replace my primary care provider or specialists?

No. MetaBridge works as a consultant. You keep your primary care provider and any specialists, and we add a metabolic plan alongside their care.
